How to build aviaries

The bird aviary plans can be modified before
and during any period of construction of the bird aviary.
Bird aviary plans are easy to read and free for general use.

Heating for your birds aviary is easy with the pet heaters displayed on our web site.
Bird aviaries are often open constructions that allow for easy viewing. This also allows draughts and rain drifts to enter the birds home.
Heating will be required in winter weather.

RODENTS ARE ATTRACTED TO BIRD AVIARIES

Aviaries situated outside will attract rodents and other vermin. Maintaining hygiene in the aviary
and easy access to rodent holes must be considered before construction of the bird aviary plan commences.

The simplest & most effective ways of creating a clean, vermin
resistant area is elevating the bird aviary floor from the ground.

Floor space should be sufficient to allow baiting for rodents but bars entry for pets. A removable mesh screen can also be added around the perimeter of the aviary floor for additional safety.

ELEVATING bird aviaries

Elevating aviaries from ground contact reduces the hidden nesting areas suitable for rodents. Baiting and removal of rodent nests will be simplified.

Poison used for baiting   MUST  be in an area that has no access to pets and children.

Prevailing winds must be also taken into account. Position the back
panel of the aviary facing into consistent wind. Location for the bird aviary must allow for your visual enjoyment of the enclosed pets. Always check with your local council if there are any rules governing the construction of a birds aviary.
Consider the location of your bird aviary if power for lighting is required. Also check for any underground obstructions ( pipes etc. ) before commencing construction of the bird aviary.

THE AVIARY PLAN

Select the aviary base as your starting point.
Base measurements of the bird aviary will become the template and guide to all the measurements of the bird aviary. Building the aviary plan with measurements that originate from the base measurements ensures a quality bird aviary that will provide good protection for your birds..

If you require a bird aviary that has tapered sides the level of difficulty constructing the bird aviary will increase. Mark each panels edge with numbers to simplify assembling of the bird aviary. Sandpaper will remove the numbers at the completion of the bird aviary

How to build bird aviaries with a Tee Pee shape

The Tee Pee bird aviary plan uses untreated posts for the sides of the bird aviary. A post that is taller than the out side posts is used to create a peak for the roof. Twelve inches ( 300 mm ) would be the lowest level of fall for the bird aviary roof. Any shallower and the roof will accumulate garden debris and water.

Eaves are an optional extra for the bird aviary. A protruding roof ledge around the aviary will reduce clutter accumulating around the perimeter of the birds aviary.

Posts used for the outer perimeter and inner support should have no copper preservative treatment. Birds will attack posts and other timber products that are within their reach.

To prevent rot, use galvanized saddles at the base of the aviary posts. These are readily available at commercial stores and will provide adequate support for large bird aviaries.

plan on how to build aviaries

Make adjustments on your selected measurements to compensate for a rising and setting sun plus rain drifts created by prevailing winds. Direct fall out from the aviary roof towards an area
that has adequate drainage.
DO NOT ALLOW THE UNDER FLOOR AREA
OF YOUR AVIARY TO BECOME DAMP

Building an aviary

Use templates whenever possible to build a birds aviary. This will reduce mistakes and improve the quality of the finished bird aviary.

The grain of all bird aviary
plywood panels must face the same way to produce a quality finish for the aviary's exterior if a lacquer or stained finish is used

Bird aviary plan

Select plywood sheets that has an exterior grade classification. The panels must not be treated with any chemicals that are toxic for your small birds unless a protective interior liner is fitted to the bird aviary.

Chemicals are often used as a preservative and may be poisonous for birds that attack the timber panels.

material and fittings required to build a bird aviary

Exposure to high winds and snow will require an aviary framed with timber that can withstand severe weather. Bird numbers and the height of the aviary plus how often entry is required will determine the final selection of framing timber. Long bird aviaries will require extra timber for support posts and noggins.

build a bird aviary

Build a bird aviary If galvanized or zinc mesh wire is to be used for the aviary plan a mesh wiring that has been electroplated with a galvanized or zinc coating should be selected. The majority of mesh wiring on the market has been dipped into a galvanizing bath. Birds can get zinc or lead poisoning from galvanized wire mesh.

insulating a birds aviary

To insulate the birds aviary tar paper can be used to line the interior of the aviary. Insulation batts can also be used for the aviaries insulation but the insulation must be cut to fit between the aviary's framing. Both forms of insulating material will require liners to protect the insulation from bird attacks.

A perch for your small pets is an important part of the aviary's equipment. We have weather proof "heated" perches.

Use only galvanized nails and screws with a protective coating for building the bird aviary. Contact adhesives that are water proof can be used in the construction of the aviary framing. An aviary entrance should not rely solely on an adhesive due to constant door impacts.

Do not use paint that contains lead. This type of paint is hazardous for your birds. Dress all joints & surfaces. Remove rough edges & exposed nails.

The use of any material that has been coated or treated with any chemicals that may be toxic to your pet should be avoided.Pets cannot be constantly supervised and it is not unusual for them to attack their enclosures and resting areas. When constructing a heated aviary, aviaries, bird home or bird box organize the positioning of the pets home and all electrical leads and connections before construction of the the heated birds home.
